Personally, I plan to continue using Velvet 56 it in a variety of different shooting scenarios: portraiture, macro, and fine art photography.*All individuals are unique. It is small enough to bring along in your camera bag to any session for some distinctive imagery that will surely enhance any image gallery. Velvet 56 is certainly different enough from the rest of Lensbaby’s lenses to earn its place in my line-up. The soft, silky quality is especially suited for women’s portraiture, and I can’t wait to try it during my next session.Ĭonsidering the unique qualities of this lens, I consider the cost reasonable, and comparable to the other lenses I own.

This is where Velvet 56 will really shine, and creating special, one-of-a-kind portraits. I had no real opportunities to try this new lens for portraiture, except for a quick headshot my husband volunteered for.

I took my Velvet on walks in Philadelphia and Boston, and it performed equally well for street photography, giving images a touch of magic. I found myself shooting macro images at apertures more wide open than I usually would to achieve the beautiful glow, making them unique. Velvet 56 is a very versatile lens, not only due to its 56mm focal length, but also due to its ability to handle macro. During my shooting, I had no trouble achieving tack sharp focus, even at wide apertures. For me, such effect was a bit overwhelming at f/1.6, but at apertures of f/2 and f/2.8 I found the glow lovely it gave my images ethereal, velvety quality. The amount of such glow in an image, of course, is a matter of personal preference. The wider the aperture, the more luminous, velvet-like effect there is. The most obvious unusual quality of this lens is that at wider apertures it creates a glow in an image. The aperture ring stayed at the desired f-stop setting while I moved the focus ring without accidentally shifting to a different aperture. By counting the clicks I knew exactly what aperture I was using while continuing to look through the viewfinder. This proved to be a very convenient feature, as I was able to adjust the aperture without having to put my camera down to look at the numbers. Velvet’s aperture ring has a subtle click as it turns from one f-stop setting to another. After about a day of shooting, I was very comfortable with the feel of the focus ring: it turns easy enough to focus quickly, yet has enough resistance that focus would not accidentally slip as I lift my fingers away from the ring. The focus ring turns smoothly, although with a bit more resistance than my other Lensbaby optics (Edge 80, Sweet 35, and Sweet 50).
